When we give birth to a dog, we name it and provide for its care and feeding. We even learn how to communicate with it – at least, in theory. And if the day comes when the dog no longer recognizes us, barks angrily when we touch it, or demands food that is not nutritive for our health, then people sometimes decide to end their days together rather than live apart for ever more. Things can get tricky when mechanics of reproduction are involved; but scientists have found an answer by studying two species of rat: one male (the father) and one female (the mother). The male rat is put into a box with the females; he mates with all of them; his offspring are killed by gassing. The DNA is extracted from the corpses; and then scientists mix it with the DNA of the male rat. The sperm cells are extracted; and then they are fertilized by mixing them with egg cells that have had their own DNA removed. But what happens when half-rats are born? Can they find a nice box to live in, so long as it is not too small? And if their mother were to tell them how to get there, could they understand her? It's the story of a child who talks about his father, but doesn't know he is his father. Charles Eugène Marique was born in 1869, at 50 rue de Turbigo, Paris. His father was a watchmaker, his mother a housewife. Marique gave up an academic career in order to write stories and books of his own. His first novel, "La mère" (The Mother) was published in 1905. In 1915 he published another book of stories under the name Albert Ehrensteins. He died in 1937 at the age of 67, leaving behind a wife and four children. Appearing for the first time on 18 November 1959, this play by Claude-Michel Schonberg was produced by Jean-Paul Sartre himself. The text was written by Schonberg and Albert Ehrenstein just before their death in 1931 and 1931 respectively. In 1960, Cocteau directed a film adaptation of the play. In 2010, "Le Père" was produced as a TV series by Belgian director Frederic Fonteyne. In 2013, the Belgian theatre company Compagnie Tracy Jeanne presented the play with a cast of only women. The play is set in an old house on rue de Turbigo, Paris. The main characters are: Monsieur Marique, a watchmaker and old man of seventy years who lives on rue de Turbigo with his wife and four children; Louise who is twenty-seven years old and works as a cashier at a haberdasher’s shop; Henri eight years old. The action takes place in the house, in the cellar and in the attic. The play begins with Monsieur Marique who has an argument with his wife; she chides him for not having money to buy dinner. Marique is very old; he walks slowly, and does not hear well. He sits at a table cluttered with tools, watches and clocks. When he hears his wife calling to him again, he shouts at her that she has no right to talk to him like that; but when she calls again he calls back that he is coming to her room; then when she stops calling finally, an idea comes into his mind. cfa1e77820
